After being written off as a doomed system post-launch Nintendo gets the last laugh. This week the company announced that sales of the Nintendo 3DS have topped 5 million in Japan alone.

Sales of the portable system were boosted after a timely price cut and the release of Monster Hunter in the region last year. Nintendo beat itself with the fastest selling hardware in Japan. The previous keeper of this achievement was the company’s own Nintendo DS.

Released over seven years ago in Japan the NDS took 56 weeks too reach 5 million. The 3DS took only 52 weeks.
